We had a great time in Laguna this weekend. One of the highlights was the 5k that my company helped produce on behalf of my client, Hyundai. As part of it, we brought in ultra runner Jenn Shelton from Ashland, OR (you might recognize the name if you read Born To Run) and her boyfriend Erik Skaggs, also a top ultra runner. They are both super cool people and the Little Girl and Jenn particularly hit it off together. I think these two are cut of the same cloth.

I'm sad to say I had to wear a tie to work today; first time in nearly three years. We had a meeting with a conservative company and a colleague strongly suggested I wear one. So, with a degree of reticence I complied. Not sure if the thing matched but whatever. Anyway, here's the proof.

off a boat earlier in the day. It was undoubtably the freshest fish
I've ever had in my life. Phil cooked it in his smoker and it was
fantastic.

The company was pretty good too. The guy who caught the fish is a
legendary ultra athlete who's finished Badwater twice and won Ultraman
Hawaii (look that one up if you have a free moment). He's a gnarly
dude. Another guy will be attempting the first ever solo swim across
the Sea of Cortez. That's 57 miles of continuous swimming.

Never ceases to amaze me what badasses live in Northern California.
These dudes make my 100 miler look like a proverbial walk in the park.

In fact there are days, like today, where I think I like my lemon tree more than my children. The tree has struggled the past few years but with all the rain this season, it's had a great yield. About a year ago we planted a satsuma tree. Think small mandarin oranges. It's a little fella but it is starting to grow. Today it yielded its first fruit - and here's the photo to prove it. I hope this tree proves to be bountiful for a hundred years to come.

She took second in IM. Her fly time in particular - 16.94 - is really spectacular. Despite her successes in the pool, I'm particularly proud of what a level headed, sweet kid she is. She won four events (IM medley relay, backstroke, fly, free relay) and came in a close second in IM. She also had three best times, which is what the coaches have them aspire to each meet. Her swim of the day was definitely the fly - her previous best was 18.26 and she broke through yesterday with a 17.25. For those of you unfamiliar with swim times, that is really fast. I will post the video from that race. And today? She's at yet another meet. She is indeed a Water Baby. Report to follow.

I couldn't resist - my Garmin is getting a bit old (though it's served me well) and it's rare that there are cool new running toys. Also, Nike's parter here, TomTom, is a sometimes client - and I have to support my clients, don't I?

Anyway, I just got it tonight and will take it for a test run in LA tomorrow night. Stay tuned for a report. One thing I can say for sure though - for a GPS watch, it's pretty good looking.

The Little Boy ran a tough 10k race with me in the am in San Francisco. He bellyached a bit but stayed with it. He's not in great running shape but he's turning into a terrific little runner. He out kicked me in the end, turned to me with a huge smile and said he wanted to do another one next week. We finished in 55 minutes and change, which was around 9 minute pace. Not bad for a little dude. He came in 2nd in the under 17 category. The Little Girl had a swim meet in Sunnyvale. It was her first long course meet (50 meter pool) and a very competitive field. She ended up taking 3rd overall in fly in a very good time and 7th in free. After the meet, she insisted on going directly to the pool, where she swam for another two hours, to go along with the six - six - she spent in the water. She's a water bug. My pride in them has nothing to do with their relative performances. I just love how active they are - and how much they enjoy an active lifestyle.

What was supposed to be a 2.5 hour run stretched into almost four and huge props to Rob for hanging tough. Dude only runs trails when he visits us, hasn't run more than 10 miles in years and busts out a 19 miler with more than 3,000 feet of climbing. Incredible. Anyway, it was wetter than wet out there. Treacherously so, actually. This video as you'll note features a rolling waterfall. I've run by it dozens of times in the past and it's never been anything more than a trickle. If it doesn't dry out soon here we are going to have big problems. We already had one slide nearby and there's a number of other areas that look ready to go.

Much to my delight he is on the Yankees. Alas, they lost 13-12 on an absolutely terrible call by the ump, who clearly wanted the game over. I couldn't help myself and went up to him after the game. I told him him he called a good game except for the last play - which would have been the tieing run. I told him he flat out blew that call and much to my surprise he agreed and apologized. That pretty much stopped me in my tracks.

Anyway, an opening game loss aside, there's nothing better than the start of baseball season. Play ball!
